Tyco Retail Solutions recently announced its Sensormatic Shrink Management as a Service (SMaaS) is now delivering visibility into electronic article surveillance (EAS) and loss prevention systems for all 642 Asda stores in the UK.

Many retailers have policies for handling a security event, and employees who fail to follow such policies can—under the “employment at will” principle—be subject to punishment, including termination. That happened to a group of asset protection associates at a Utah Walmart, but they challenged their firings in a lawsuit.

According to a 2017 National Retail Federation survey, organized retail crime (ORC) is on the rise. That's useful information for corporate industry executives, but loss prevention professionals in stores—those who see loss prevention issues like ORC every day—are well aware of the problem.

The vendor-retailer relationship is complicated, time-consuming, and sometimes frustrating. But if it's the right relationship, it can be mutually beneficial and everyone is happy—or at least minimally dissatisfied, depending on your perspective.

There must be unwavering support by the leaders at the highest level of the organization in order for an information security policy to weave itself into the day-to-day operations of the business. This will only happen if the policy reflects core business objectives.
