Interview and Interrogation Training: The Use of Silence

This week’s International Association of Interviewers interview and interrogation training tip provided by Wicklander-Zulawski, has Wayne Hoover, CFI exploring the use of silence.

Silence in the interview can work. Silence during the interrogation—while considered a technique for many years—can be a very risky proposition. So looking at the interview, how do we use it properly?

Maybe, for example, silence may be used as a subject is telling you what occurred. If you remain silent, the subject may begin to feel uncomfortable and provide you with a little more detail. By the same respect, silence during the interrogation may make us appear uncertain or less confident. If used at the wrong time, it may be used by the subject to help create an answer. However, it may be used during the development stage of the interrogation to help gain additional details…
