Organized retail crime (ORC) poses a significant threat to retailers across the United States, resulting in billions of dollars in annual losses. The National Retail Federation’s (NRF) most recent National Retail Security Survey reported a staggering $112.1 billion in losses from shrink in 2022, up from $93.9 billion in 2021. While retail shrink encompasses various types of losses—theft, which includes ORC, accounts for nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of the total.

In addition to the financial toll, ORC incidents are becoming increasingly violent and brazen, heightening concerns for the safety of retail workers and consumers alike. According to the NRF’s 2023 survey, more than two-thirds (67 percent) of respondents said they were seeing more violence and aggression from ORC perpetrators compared with a year ago. These alarming trends highlight the urgent need for proactive measures that lead to the identification, investigation, and resolution of ORC.

To prevent recurring incidents and deter repeat offenders, the key lies in securing the objective evidence needed for case closure. One effective solution is the integration of Flock Safety license plate recognition (LPR) cameras. By capturing and analyzing license plate data, LPR technology equips asset protection and loss prevention teams with crucial evidence to establish connections between suspects, vehicles, and stolen merchandise. The integration of LPR data with investigative procedures enhances the efficiency and accuracy of ORC investigations, ultimately contributing to the deterrence of future criminal activity within the retail sector.
