A Central Texas police officer, working off-duty security at a local mall, was injured Sunday trying to stop a shoplifter. Waco Police Sergeant Patrick Swanton said officers were called to the Dillard’s at the Richland Mall around 3:45 PM Sunday. The callers were telling dispatchers the officer was struggling with a shoplifter, Andre Boyd, and then reported that he was being dragged as Boyd tried to get away, Swanton said.
In a press release, Swanton said the officer, Roy Luna, was trying to stop Boyd outside the men’s Dillard’s when Boyd was able to break free and get to his vehicle. Luna was able to keep Boyd inside the car and tried to Taser him multiple times, but Boyd was able to start the car and try to drive away, police said. As Boyd was trying to get away, his vehicle hit five cars, and crushed the officer’s leg between two vehicles, Swanton said.
Eventually, Luna was able to turn the car off and with the help of bystanders keep Boyd in the car until back up arrived. An investigation by police determined Boyd stole more than $750 in merchandise. Luna was hospitalized… KWTX10 News
