Westchester County police in New York arrested five people Wednesday who are accused of stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise from TJ Maxx and other retail stores in recent months. They were taken into custody in Mount Vernon, Queens and the Bronx, and stolen property valued at more than $100,000 was seized.
Several vans and a U-Haul truck were needed to haul away the seized stolen goods, police said. Investigators estimate the loss of goods to be valued at more than $500,000. The five are accused of engaging in identity theft and credit card fraud to commit the larcenies. Police said they obtained many cards for short-term use until discovered and shut down. They also made phony cards.
