Clerk Stabbed in Neck after Trying to Stop Shoplifter

A gas station attendant was stabbed in the neck Monday in Woodbridge while trying to thwart a shoplifting attempt from the station’s convenience store, authorities said.

Police later arrested Harlin M. Rodriguez, of Carteret, and charged him with attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault and two weapons offenses.

Rodriguez, 23, stabbed the 42-year-old employee at Racestar on Port Reading Avenue in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge around 5:15 PM, according to Woodbridge police. He then left the area.

The attendant was brought to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive, though police didn’t have an update on his condition Tuesday.
