Loss Prevention Issues Are Law Enforcement Issues

According to a 2017 National Retail Federation survey, organized retail crime (ORC) is on the rise. That’s useful information for corporate industry executives, but loss prevention professionals in stores—those who see loss prevention issues like ORC every day—are well aware of the problem. Shrinking budgets, fluctuating regulations, and increasing repercussions from the opioid epidemic all add to the strain faced by those on the front lines.

That’s why it’s important for LP pros to work closely with law enforcement on some of these loss prevention issues, says Karl Langhorst, CPP, CFI, executive vice president of ALTO Alliance, in a sponsored article in the latest issue of LPM Online. The article lists five actionable steps that loss prevention professionals can take to improve their chances of impacting ORC levels. From the article:

Tip 1. Get to know local law enforcement officers on a first-name basis. Share a meal or coffee with police officers who are responsible for the areas surrounding your stores. Attend local law enforcement events and invite those officers to your company’s store and social events.

Tip 2. Share information with loss prevention peers at other retailers. Offenders are typically not just victimizing one retailer. Sharing information helps identify repeat criminals and potentially expands the opportunity to build a stronger ORC case for prosecution.
