Organized retail crime (ORC) poses a significant threat to retailers across the United States, resulting in billions of dollars in annual losses. The National Retail Federation’s (NRF) most recent National Retail Security Survey reported a staggering $112.1 billion in losses from shrink in 2022, up from $93.9 billion in 2021. While retail shrink encompasses various types of losses—theft, which includes ORC, accounts for nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of the total. 
In addition to the financial toll, ORC incidents are becoming increasingly violent and brazen, heightening concerns for the safety of retail workers and consumers alike. According to the NRF’s 2023 survey, more than two-thirds (67 percent) of respondents said they were seeing more violence and aggression from ORC perpetrators compared with a year ago. These alarming trends highlight the urgent need for proactive measures that lead to the identification, investigation, and resolution of ORC.
