On-Demand: Learn about De-escalation and Other Important Retail Safety Issues

Safety in the workplace is one of the most important goals for employers and employees to keep in mind every day. Especially in an environment like retail where we interact with both customers and other employees on a consistent basis, it’s important to follow safe practices at all times when engaging in the daily responsibilities of your job. This could be true whether dealing with common workplace hazards, following poor habits, dealing with the aftermath of a global pandemic, or simply interacting with others in the retail setting.

With all that happens and the endless possibilities that can arise on a daily basis, it’s important for all of us to take the steps to be aware and prepared for the different safety concerns that could arise in the workplace to keep you and your colleagues safe at all times.

Two Sides to the De-Escalation Coin
Creating a De-Escalation Strategy that Pays Off!

On One Side: De-Escalation through Technology

Iona Blake
Louise Kadege

Hear from a top global retailer from the UK as we discuss their success leveraging body-worn devices to support their strategy to reduce violence and disruptive customers in their stores. While still a newer concept in the US, and less widely used (for now), this has been very successful with a number of UK and EU retailers who have not only seen a reduction in violence, but fewer disruptive incidents, a reduction in theft, increased morale with store associates, and even an improved sales. Iona Blake, security and incident manager of loss at Boots UK and Louise Kadege, managing director at ORIS, are the panelists. We will also be joined by special guest moderator Louise Kadege, Editor-in-Chief of Loss Prevention Magazine Europe.

On the Flip Side: De-Escalation, It’s All in the Training

Bringing it home to the US, Jesse Stanley with Strongside Principles will be joined by Dave Magersupp, senior manager of loss prevention and the violence intervention, prevention, and response (VIPR) team with Verizon to discuss the impact of training store associates to deal with disruptive customers and avoid conflict. With similar results found in successful training, is the technology play a compliment? We will be asking our group of retail and industry experts to weigh in.

Workplace Fatigue: Is Everyone Just Tired of Working?

We could joke and say, “Who isn’t tired of working?” but that’s not the real point here. Workplace fatigue is a real issue. But what exactly is it and how do we mitigate the risks? Workplace fatigue and burnout, attributed to longer work hours and increased work demands, are on the rise for many workers across the country. Stay with us for a discussion with Imelda Wong, program coordinator at the Center for Work and Fatigue Research at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to review the factors contributing to and effects of work-related fatigue, how the issue is being compounded based on the current retail trends and societal challenges, and what organizations can do create safer, healthier workplaces.
