Columnists Discuss Wide Variety of Important Loss Prevention Topics

The columnists in the November-December issue address multiple topics of interest to loss prevention professionals– from internal theft interviewing techniques to vendor-retailer partnerships to shoplifter apprehension.

The executives at Wicklander-Zulawski continue their discussion of the importance of context in part 4 of the series in the Interviewing column. “The presentation of showing understanding to the subject reinforces the feeling that the interviewer is not an opponent, but simply trying to understand the reasons why something has happened,” advise the authors. If you interview internal suspects, don’t miss this column.

Cita Doyle, LPQ, director of sales and marketing for InstaKey Security Systems, provides her reasons for obtaining the LPQ certification as a vehicle to “have a better empathy and understanding for the role and challenges that loss prevention professionals and retailers face.” The Q&A with Doyle is in the Certification column titled “Forging Partnerships.”

A new column called Future of LP is written by Tom Meehan, CFI, corporate manager of data, systems, and central investigations for Bloomingdale’s. In his first article, Meehan sets the stage for the discussion of a broad array of topics focused on the rapidly changing retail industry environment, especially surrounding the new technologies and emerging challenges faced by loss prevention professionals.

Situational awareness is a key focus of the Loss Prevention Research Council according to the LPRC director Read Hayes, PhD, CPP. In his Evidence-Based LP column, Hayes explains the concept this way, “Everyone needs situational awareness. In our case, it’s who is planning to hit our stores, who is coming to hit us now, and who is already in our stores and wants to hurt us?”

Other columns from the LP Magazine staff include a discussion of the five steps of shoplifter apprehension and other safety-related issues by Jacque Brittain, LPC; looking back on some significant issues of 2015 by Jim Lee, LPC; and an introduction to the magazine’s new digital platform by Jack Trlica.
