Shoplifting Suspect Fleeing Police Hit by Vehicle, Dies at Hospital

A shoplifting suspect died Sunday after being hit by a vehicle while trying to run from police, officials said. Tarrant County Medical Examiner officials identified the deceased man on Monday as Michael Batey, 39. A city of residence was not listed. North Richland Hills police in Texas had been dispatched to the Walmart at 6401 N.E. Loop 820 at about 5 p.m. Sunday on a report of shoplifting in progress.

The suspect, who had left the store on foot, at first tried to hide from officers in the parking lot. He then fled toward the N.E. Loop 820 access road, where he was briefly caught but resisted arrest, police said. The suspect fled again and ran across the 6400 block of the highway, where a vehicle struck him. Officers began CPR and administered other emergency aid until paramedics arrived on the scene. Batey was taken by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital where he died from his injuries. No others were injured, police said.  [Source: Star-Telegram]
