Retail Stores Prepare for Second Wave of Pandemic

Another wave of coronavirus cases could mean another run on items such as face masks, hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies, but some retailers say they are prepared for it.

A Target spokesperson said the big-box store has quickly adjusted to changes in consumer demand.

“As we look ahead to the holiday season, we’re sending more inventory to stores than ever before to ensure Target has the most in-demand items,” the spokesperson said.

Felix Turner, a corporate affairs manager for Kroger, said the overall supply chain remains strong for the grocery store.

“The supplies of household staples that were in short supply at the onset of the pandemic such as toilet paper, bleach, hand sanitizer and hand wipes have improved,” he said. “Items in high demand that are selling out quickly include paper towels, certain surface cleaners and surface cleaning wipes.”

Walmart is aware of the need for items and is closely communicating with suppliers both stateside and abroad to prepare for any temporary shortfalls, according to Casey Staheli, the senior manager of national media relations.

For now, shoppers do not appear to be concerned with a shortage of supplies if a second wave does occur. Marcia Thomas of Evans said she feels like she and other people she knows have what they need currently.

“Whenever I’ve been to the store there might be a few items they’re low on, but they’re still there,” she said. “As long as people don’t hoard things like they did before, I think we’ll be all right.”

In March, stores were plagued with empty shelves of items as customers bought items by the cartload to prepare for the pandemic. Many stores, including Costco, implemented limits on certain items to make sure members were able to purchase what they need.
