As we observe Black History Month, I am filled with appreciation for the rich history of African American contributions that have shaped our nation. This month serves as a reminder of the resilience, innovation, and leadership demonstrated by Black individuals throughout history. It is a time when many honor the legacy of those who paved the way and a time to reflect on our ongoing responsibility to foster progress within our communities.
In my former Board role as director of early career professionals with the International Organization of Black Security Executives (IOBSE), I was privileged to contribute to an organization dedicated to developing future leaders for tomorrow’s challenges. Founded in 1982, IOBSE has grown to be the leading organization for minority security professionals, committed to providing quality security and management-focused educational programs. These initiatives are designed to serve members at all career levels, from students to practitioners to senior executives.
The mission at IOBSE is multifaceted:
- Imparting professional resources from security management to business operations, ensuring that the members are equipped with the tools necessary to excel in their roles.
- Providing education and training that keeps practitioners and students abreast of current trends in security operations and technology. Through the programs offered, IOBSE ensures that all members remain at the forefront of industry developments.
- Facilitating professional networking to encourage the exchange of information, ideas, knowledge, and experience, fostering a community of continuous learning and support.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my involvement with IOBSE is witnessing the impact of our Student Education Program. This initiative exists to identify and develop minority college students who wish to pursue careers in security. By introducing students to various security professions through educational programs, networking, and mentoring opportunities, the program aims to set them on a path to success.
The Campus Partnership Program further exemplifies this commitment. Members of our Student Education Committee partner with universities and colleges to engage with students, particularly those in the criminal justice and sociology fields. Through classroom discussions, career fairs, and career preparation seminars, IOBSE builds awareness of the vast opportunities within the security industry and helps jumpstart students’ careers.
Reflecting on the significance of Black History Month, I am reminded of the importance of mentorship and giving back. My involvement with IOBSE is a token of my commitment to uplifting the next generation of security professionals. By providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities, I am able to honor the legacy of those who came before us and ensure that their contributions continue to inspire future leaders.
Black History Month is not only a time to reflect on the past but also a call to action for the future. It is an opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to fostering uniqueness across the security industry and beyond. Through organizations like IOBSE, we can continue to make meaningful strides in developing leaders who will shape a more secure and equitable world.
Happy Black History Month!
