POLITICO’s Ruth Reader reports that counterfeit, potentially unsafe abortion pills are flooding the internet after the Supreme Court gave states the right to ban abortion last month. Enter “buy Cytotec online cheap” into Google and the first four results are sites that illegally offer to ship abortion pills without a prescription.
This is especially interesting because despite the Supreme Court decision, it’s still possible to get abortion medication, even in states where it’s restricted, via telemedicine or by traveling state lines. Nonetheless, scammers are profiting off of Americans’ confusion.
Some of these counterfeit pills might be effective, but many could be expired or unsafe, and often they could never be delivered—some scammers are simply stealing credit card information, or never filling orders placed and paid for.
According to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, 95 percent of the roughly 35,000 online pharmacies worldwide operate illegally.
