Mid Week with Jim Lee: On the Road Again

After traveling for over 40 years, I’ve discovered that some places are more special than others to visit.

Not just for work, but for the before and after hours. You should always enjoy the city as much as the company you are working for or with. I have tried to do that over the years.

Here is my Eight is Enough List. ( I get bored with Top Ten’s.) These are not in any particular order, as all are a great place to visit.

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND… Beautiful downtown that is easy to walk and a place to spend time in the fall. Magnificent houses of the rich. Have to visit The Breakers, Fort Adams and take a walk along the Newport Cliff. Home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Naval War College. Short drive to CVS headquarters.

FRISCO, TEXAS… Great flat farmland turned into big city. Home to the Frisco Heritage Museum, Dr. Pepper Stadium and how bout dem Cowboys’ state-of-the-art practice facility. Short drive to JCPenney and Rent-A-Center home offices. If you want a fun visit, head down the road to 7-Eleven and the Slurpee Headquarters.

SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS… The capital city of all witchcraft, home to the 1692 witch trials and current Witch Museum, and the Seven Gables House. Want sports? Try the Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots. Want to a visit to a class retailer? Try TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE… The historic downtown is like going back in time. Try the Franklin on Foot tour and visit the site of the Battle of Franklin. Want to spend a great evening of music? Go north to Nashville and the home of country music: bar after bar with live music and good food. Want a good work visit? Try Carl’s Jr and Hardee’s, Tractor Supply, Dollar General and Lifeway Christian.

MOORESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA… Quaint downtown, good food, grand Lake Norman nearby and lots of quality visits to retailers. Lowe’s, Family Dollar, Belk, Harris Teeter, Rack Room, Ross Logistics—all are nearby. Home to LP Magazine, the LP Foundation and Davidson College: now there is a mouthful of education.

FISHERS, INDIANA… Likely, you have heard of Carmel, but this is the place most like living. It is close to Sahm’s Bar and Grill, which may have the best breaded tenderloin in the world. This is a breaded sandwich that is almost exclusive to Indiana. You must have one before you finish crossing home plate. Lots of good sports, high school basketball, college sports of Purdue and Indiana are A short drive.

BUCKHEAD, GEORGIA… A residential area of Atlanta. Maybe more good places to eat per square mile than anywhere. Try Hal’s and Bone’s if you are hungry for a good steak. Drive up the road for a great visit to The Home Depot and the new Atlanta Braves state-of-the-art baseball stadium.

NEWPORT, KENTUCKY… The other Newport on my list and maybe my favorite visit of all. Got to love the old buildings and the history each of them holds inside of their walls. Known for its casinos in the ’30s and ’40s, plenty of historic breweries and old store retailers such as Woolworth’s (now turned into an historic hotel). You want good chili? Several establishments here fight over that designation. Across the river is Kroger headquarters and the friendliest baseball park in the country, the Reds. And lastly, you are in Kentucky—horse tracks and horses abound.

Well, there is my Eight (8). What’s on your list?
