Shoplifting Suspect Leads Police on Chase That Reaches 120 MPH

A chase that reached speeds of 120 mph ended in a crash Sunday evening after a caller reported a shoplifting incident in Wisconsin. Kevin A. Block, 47, was taken to Ascension Hospital in Eagle River after the crash and then flown to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau for treatment, according to Rhinelander Police. Officers are keeping Bock under guard.

An employee at Walmart in Rhinelander reported a shoplifter at 7:42 p.m. Sunday. The suspect left the store before an officer arrived, but employees were able to provide a description of the suspect’s vehicle, which had a Michigan license plate, according to police.

A Rhinelander officer saw Block’s vehicle travel near State 17 and Timber Drive, thought it matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver sped away, according to police.

Block continued north on State 17 and left the Rhinelander city limits, according to police. The officer continued chasing the vehicle, and speeds reached 120 mph at times, according to police. Other law enforcement agencies got involved in the chase, and a Vilas County deputy placed spiked strips in the northbound traffic lane of State 17… Wausau Daily Herald
