An employee of a Bayonne (New Jersey) dollar store wrestled a knife-wielding shoplifter to the ground, disarmed him and held him until police arrived Monday, authorities said.
Darnell Sanford, 54, of New York was arrested at 9:25 a.m. at the Family Dollar on Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne police Captain Eric Amato said. He was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sanford was also wanted on four warrants, three from Jersey City and one from Union Township, Amato said.
Police were told that Sanford left the store with $61 in items without paying and he was confronted by an employee, who grabbed the bag of stolen merchandise. Sanford then took a fighting stance and pulled a small pocket knife from his pants pocket, Amato said. The store worker subdued Sanford, took him to the ground and knocked the knife from his hand.
