This week’s International Association of Interviewers interview and interrogation training tip provided by Wicklander-Zulawski, has David Thompson, CFI discussing attitudes, biases, and choosing the right interviewer.
When planning for your next interview it is important to keep in mind that one of the reasons the subject may or may not confess is because of the interviewer themselves.
We need to be self-aware and identify if we have any preconceived judgment or bias against or in favor of a subject we are about to interview.
Maybe we’ve had a run-in with this person in the past, or you simply just don’t get along. Or maybe it is a person that you’ve trusted before and you don’t believe that they’re the type to do something dishonest. Your prior relationship or bias with this person may interfere with developing rapport any having an open mind when it comes to the development of the admission.
Remember, we are a mediator and a fact finder, and we need to maintain an ethical and impartial approach to every interview.
Every loss prevention investigator should continuously strive to enhance their investigative interviewing skills as part of an ongoing commitment to best-in-class interviewing performance.
