Police are considering whether to file charges against a Delaware man who chased down and pointed a gun at a man accused of stealing steaks from a College Square grocery store. Detectives are still investigating the incident and will consult with the attorney general’s office to determine if the 64-year-old man should be prosecuted, according to Sgt. Gerald Bryda, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. Nov. 7 when a man entered the Acme and stole $145 worth of rib-eye steaks and frozen shrimp. An Acme employee chased the man, who got into his car and drove out of the parking lot. Another witness, unconnected to the store, saw the commotion, got into his vehicle and pursued the alleged shoplifter, Bryda said.
The witness pulled into the path of the shoplifter’s vehicle and got out to confront him. At some point, the witness, who has a concealed-carry permit, drew his handgun and pointed it at the shoplifter’s vehicle, Bryda said, adding that the witness later told police the vehicle started to move and he was worried the shoplifter would run him over. The shoplifter backed up his vehicle and then sped away.
Meanwhile, police are seeking the public’s help identifying the shoplifter, who was able to get away. He fled in a dark-colored, older-model Chevrolet sedan with tinted windows and a damaged muffler.
