A (Yakima) woman is under arrest after police say she assaulted Fred Meyer store workers while trying to steal thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Police got the call just after midnight Monday morning of a strong-arm robbery at the Fred Meyer on 40th Avenue.
Store staff say a woman had assaulted a Loss Prevention Officer as she attempted to flee the store with what she’d stolen. Police found a woman matching the description walking down the road nearby and arrested 26-year-old Asia R Gilyard.
Workers at Fred Meyer say Gilyard had spent five hours in the store collecting a large amount of items, while Loss Prevention Officers (LPOs) watched her through surveillance cameras. The LPOs told police Gilyard then went into the bathroom with the merchandise and they could hear a large amount of flushing, and they believe she had flushed the tags of the items she intended to steal.
When Gilyard went to leave through a side door workers confronted her and that’s when police say there was a struggle over a duffel bag that ended with Gilyard slapping one of the LPOs. Workers say the total loss of the items involved in the attempted theft were approximately $2,000. Police say Gilyard told them she has an “adrenaline thing” and that she likes to act like she is stealing so people chase her… KIMA News
