And the No. 1 reason we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th
That was the date that the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence that had been drafted in June with the final draft submitted on July 2nd. The date of July 4th, 1776, was then added to the handwritten draft that is now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, DC, as well as on printed copies of the Declaration of Independence that were circulated throughout the colonies. The Fourth of July did not become a national holiday for almost a hundred years until the US Congress did so in 1870 along with Christmas and several other federal holidays.
