A man opened fire at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas on Saturday, killing at least eight people and wounding seven. The victims ranged in age from 5- to 61-years-old.
A police officer was already at the mall when the shooting broke out. He followed the sound of the gunshots to track down the shooter and kill him.
The shooter was a 33-year-old who used to work as a security guard, and had received firearms training.
Since the shooting, Vice President Kamala Harris called the incident a senseless act of violence and urged Congress to strengthen gun safety laws.
“While there is much we do not yet know about this attack, here is what we do know: all Americans deserve to be safe from gun violence. But they are not. Not because we do not know the solutions. But because the American people are divided on this issue—even a majority of gun owners support sensible reforms,” Harris said in a statement.
President Biden asked Congress to “send a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.” He’s calling for universal background checks and safe storage measures.
