A vehicle pursuit Monday afternoon following a retail theft at Kohl’s on North Vermilion Street in Illinois ended when the suspect shot himself, according to a press release from Public Safety Director Larry Thomason. Around 3 p.m. Danville police officers responded to the 3700 block of North Vermilion Street and located a 32-year-old man in his vehicle. As officers approached the stationary vehicle, the male driver drove off and police pursued,” Thomason said. “The suspect vehicle eventually got onto Vermilion Street and went north where the vehicle struck a utility pole in front of WorkSource, 3715 N. Vermilion St. “The subject fled the vehicle and ran to the north side of the business.”
In an open field a weapon was displayed by the subject. “Before officers could approach the individual, he fired one shot into his person,” he said. The suspect did not point his weapon at the officers, according to Thomason. The man was in critical condition and taken to a Champaign-area hospital. His status was unknown as of Monday evening. According to Thomason no shots were fired by Danville police. The Illinois State Police was contacted to assist in the investigation of the shooting. No other details are being released at this time.
