Suspects in several recent thefts at Ralph Lauren in downtown New Canaan, Connecticut, rammed a police vehicle while officers attempted to stop them Sunday, October 13. Around 3:20 PM, an off-duty New Canaan Police officer working a security assignment at the Ralph Lauren store at 51 Elm St. saw a vehicle in a no-parking zone in front of the store. Police said a black man and black woman got out of the car, a gray Acura sedan, while another black man waited in the driver’s seat of the car.
The woman approached the store, but immediately returned to the car after she saw the officer, police said. When the man who entered the store was approached by the officer, he “abruptly” left the store and got into the waiting vehicle.
Police said the Acura, bearing stolen Connecticut license plate AR-37641, headed west on Elm Street toward Park Street at a high rate of speed. Police vehicles responding to the area of Park Street and Cherry Street after being alerted by the officer at Ralph Lauren saw the suspect vehicle turn from Park Street to Cherry Street at a high rate of speed. Police said the suspect vehicle drove straight at a police vehicle on Cherry Street, and despite the officer’s attempt to avoid impact struck the officer’s vehicle.
