Retailer Pulls the Plug on Contact-Less Payments

JCPenney is suspending all contact-less payment options, according to a statement the company sent to Retail Dive. TechCrunch first reported the story after a customer complained on social media about the inability to make a purchase with Apple Pay at a JCPenney location.

JCPenney said customers can continue to pay manually by inserting or swiping their physical credit cards at the company’s point-of-sale terminals in stores, “an option used by the vast majority of JCPenney shoppers.”

According to a 2017 Visa EMV News report, every U.S. merchant that accepts contact-less payments needs to support EMV contact-less chip functionality as of April 13, 2019. A JCPenney spokesperson confirmed that the retailer has suspended contact-less payments to comply with the mandate “until a later date…” RetailDIVE
