Violence in the workplace, as reported in retail stores is at an all-time high. So much so that loss prevention and human resource leaders report it is impacting their ability to hire store associates who deem retail as unsafe. In fact, some have suggested that one retail vertical, supermarkets, has become a battleground, as the US continues to grapple with mass shootings. These highly public and tragic events at retailers such as Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, NY; King Soopers in Boulder, Colorado; and Weis Markets in Eaton Township, Pennsylvania have also impacted national chains such as Walmart and Kroger. In fact, 12 of the largest supermarket chains report 137 deaths in their stores since 2020 alone.
