Off-Duty Police Officer Was Only Shooter in Crowded Store

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and fatally injured a man, and injured two of the man’s relatives, after the man assaulted the officer in a crowded Costco on Friday night, Corona police said Saturday.

The two family members were being treated at hospitals and were listed in critical condition, the Corona Police Department said in a statement. Officials did not immediately detail their precise relationship to the man who died.

The LAPD officer was not immediately identified and was not in custody Saturday evening. The man who died was identified as Kenneth French, 32, of Riverside. The incident, which resulted in shocked shoppers fleeing the store, started when the officer was shopping with his family. “Without provocation, a male unknown to the officer’s family assaulted the officer while the officer was holding his young child,” the statement said. “This attack resulted in the officer firing his weapon, striking the male and two of the male’s family members.”
