The 25-year retail veteran started his career at Jordan Marsh and Mervyns before moving into management roles at Luxottica Retail, Sunglass Hut, and Limited Brands where he was senior vice president of LP and global security. Jones also led the loss prevention functions at the Retail Industry Leaders Association as well as at eBay. Most recently he was COO for Turning Point Justice before moving to CKE. Undercover Loss Prevention vs. Visible LP: Has the Debate Changed?
One study finds visible security reduces shrinkage better—but the use of undercover loss prevention / plainclothes agents is the strategy that is growing.

Writing on the issue of store detectives and loss prevention several years ago, Read Hayes, Ph.D., CPP, director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, outlined a critical issue that all LP leaders face. “The question for senior loss prevention decision-makers is whether having their detectives stand at the store entrance/exit overtly identified as a member of loss prevention staff prevents more theft attempts than does apprehending shop thieves after covertly observing their theft activities,” he wrote.
One recent study took aim at that question. It’s only one analysis, of a single Brooklyn retailer’s experience, but it found visible loss prevention agents reduced shrink better than undercover loss prevention agents do… Read the full article.
The Very Real Risks of Using Drones for Security Purposes

One reason drones were such a hot topic at the ISC West conference in April was, certainly, because manufacturers are pushing the technology. They were in Las Vegas in force, explaining the risk drones pose to security operations and, not coincidentally, how you can deploy counter-drones to protect against them. Consultants and trainers were there, too, offering their assistance to ready organizations for the “drone revolution.” In all, ISC West included nine education sessions on the topic.
But even if we’ve arrived at the point—common in an emerging technology’s life cycle—where prediction of commercial adoption exceeds realistic timetables, there is no doubt that security practitioners can’t altogether ignore the trend… Read the full article.
