A Wanted 82-Year-Old Nabbed in Failed Shoplifting Attempt

An 82-year-old man was behind bars Tuesday, accused of stealing $102 in merchandise from a local Marc’s store. Calvin Smith of Lippert Road NE, is also a habitual sex offender who moved from his home without telling authorities, according to Stark County Jail records.

Smith was arrested at 4 PM Monday at the Marc’s store in the 30th Street Plaza, 3112 Cleveland Ave. NW, on a theft charge and a warrant charging him with failure to register his new address.

According to the jail records, Marc’s store security officers stopped him after he left the store with merchandise without paying. Police Lieutenant Dennis Garren said Smith is accused of stealing $102 worth of bacon and face masks.

Stark County court records show he went to prison for raping a child under the age of 13 in 2002, in 2007 for unlawful sexual conduct with a child between 13 and 16 years old, and in 2008 for sexual battery of two other girls between ages 13 and 16.
